S1.E21 - Seeing Jesus in All of Scripture

October 8, 2018 EEleaders

EE Leaders | Leadership Lessons Season 1 Episode 21 - Seeing Jesus in All of Scripture

Dr. Warren Gage, Fort Lauderdale, FL, talks about how we understand and preach Christ in all the scriptures. Jesus spoke about this in John 5:39: “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.” What we want to find in all the scripture is the gospel. Using three different passages—the sleep of Adam for his bride (Genesis 2), Daniel in the lion’s den (Daniel 6), and the story of Zacchaeus (Luke 19), Dr. Gage points out where and how the gospel is pictured, sometimes simply and other times with elaborate detail. You can read more on this subject in Dr. Gage’s book Milestones to Emmaus. Follow his leadership ministry at alexandrianforum.org

In this week’s One Piece of Advice, Pastor David Guzik shares his advice about what is most important in teaching the Bible.

One Piece of Advice - The Message is in the Text

Pastor David Guzik, Santa Barbara, California, shares his advice which is specifically in the area of biblical preaching and teaching. “Come to the Bible with the mentality that the message is in the biblical text. You don’t have to create a message.” Your job as a preacher and teacher is to unlock and reveal and explain the message. The idea of having to create a message each time is an unnecessary burden to bear. “Reorient your thinking. Say, ‘The message is there—I just need to let it be exposed, to bring the biblical message.’” Then you can apply all your skills in making that message known. It will make you a more effective church leader. You can find David Guzik online at enduringword.com.

Quotes:

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:29

“We have to have the resurrection that validates the work of Christ on the cross, that is the Father’s acceptance of His sacrifice on our behalf in a substitutionary sense.” -Warren Gage

“The core of the gospel is substitution. I would urge everybody that is in a preaching or teaching role—that is the point that needs to be clarified most, the idea that somebody has to understand that Christ died in their place.” -Warren Gage

“We can read the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, in such a way as to see the gospel in all the stories. I think it’s the common denominator to every major narrative in the text.” -Warren Gage

“The more of these illustrations that you see, eventually you learn that the gospel really is everywhere.” -Warren Gage

S1.E18 - Recruiting & Retaining Volunteers

September 17, 2018 EEleaders

EE Leaders | Leadership Lessons Season 1 Episode 18 - Recruiting & Retaining Volunteers

In this week’s episode, Pastor Daniel talks about how leaders can encourage people to become actively involved in serving God through serving others. Jesus demonstrated this active service by washing His disciples’ feet. “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.” (John 13:14-15) The idea of encouraging others to serve is a natural part of leadership. From Jesus’ example in Mark 3, Daniel shares practical ways to help us in recruiting and retaining people for ministry. Have the right attitude. Ask people personally. Give clear instructions. Lead by example. Explain the why of what we do. Be real. This is hard work. People need encouragement. Give them the word of God. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58) Show appreciation to your volunteers. Rely on God. “What we’re doing is impossible without the Holy Spirit. It is God working through us.” We have to be able to choose people and then depend on God to do the work. Pray and ask for the Lord to do it, for His kingdom and His glory.

This week’s One Piece of Advice about shepherding your team comes from Dr. Warren Gage, who serves in Fort Lauderdale.

One Piece of Advice - Seek a Pastor’s Heart

Pastor Warren Gage, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, shares the advice he received himself as a young preacher from his own mentor, Dr. W.A. Criswell to seek a pastor’s heart, a shepherd’s heart. “To seek a shepherd’s heart is to share in the heart of Christ himself.” In seeking this heart you will receive insight into the scriptures that very few people have. You will see God’s word through the heart and eyes of Jesus, the Great Shepherd. “Be encouraged. Seek that heart. Study the Savior. Learn His love for His people—the good shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep.”

“We have to work together to get great things done.” -Daniel Williams

“We want to encourage and persuade people to serve God by serving others.” -Daniel Williams

“Serving is a part of our faith. It’s how we grow. And we should want to recruit people to mature and to grow in the body and to serve one another.” -Daniel Williams

“It is an incredible privilege to serve Jesus. People follow passion. They follow conviction. If you have the right attitude that says it is worth it, people will follow that.” -Daniel Williams
