S4.E13 - Don't Miss Out

July 4, 2022 EEleaders

In this week’s lesson from Nehemiah 3, Pastor Daniel talks about those who did not help to build the wall. They were there. They could have helped, but they chose not to. God gives us the opportunity to join Him in the work He is doing here on earth. We can miss out on the work of God if we aren’t careful and do not put our hands to the plow. We know there is work to be done. Jesus said in Luke 10:2 “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Don’t miss out on what God has called you to do.

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams shares about what to do when people don’t come to church to serve. Only a handful of people actually help and get involved. “We keep praying that God will move in people’s hearts and continue to make the needs known.” A look at one of the harder sides of ministry from someone who knows.

S4.E12 - It Takes A Team

June 27, 2022 EEleaders

Pastor Daniel talks about how a great vision takes a great team to accomplish it. How you are serving Jesus and His church, matters. In Nehemiah 3 we see very clearly the importance of teamwork as Nehemiah joins together with many people to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem. Working alongside others is God’s way of getting things done. This is His design and His plan. We see it throughout the entire Bible. Pastor Daniel highlights the many ways this chapter illustrates God’s wisdom and purpose in teamwork. God uses us where we are with what we have to give.

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams shares what God has taught him about teamwork throughout his many years of ministry. God will show you the people He has called to be on your team. What about a difficult team? Pastor Joe will tell you.

S4.E11 - It Takes Work

June 20, 2022 EEleaders

S4.E11 - It Takes Work

Pastor Daniel talks about how great vision requires great work, from Nehemiah 3. In this chapter, Nehemiah and the people begin the actual physical work of rebuilding the walls around the city of Jerusalem. Praying, having vision, and planning must result in carrying out the work. By faith, we must be doers. We are blessed when we apply God’s word through our actions. Each person working on this project is listed by name in this chapter. God sees our work and acknowledges it. It matters to Him. Don’t give up!

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams shares his thoughts on God’s design for His people to have a good work ethic. God is not going to do the work for us. He gives the vision, we do the work. It is not easy, but it is worth it. You never see the hand of God unless you keep going and move forward.

And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

S4.E10 - God Honors Planning

June 13, 2022 EEleaders

S4.E10 - God Honors Planning

Pastor Daniel talks about the importance of planning. Nehemiah was a planner. He had an answer for the king when he asked him what how he could help because he (Nehemiah) had prayed and thought about what he would need. The work of planning must be done well. Pastor Daniel discusses two aspects of planning: 1)Planning is biblical and 2)Planning is not God. You’ll want to listen to this episode that is jam-packed with helpful tips on how to plan.

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams shares his own lifelong observations on planning. God is a planner. He sets things in order. We are to follow His example. He wants us to use our time wisely, just like ants do. (Proverbs 6:6-11) Don’t be lazy! Some straight talk from Pastor Joe!

S4.E9 - Leading from Silence & Solitude

June 6, 2022 EEleaders

S4.E9 - Leading from Silence & Solitude

Pastor Daniel talks about the practice of silence and solitude in leadership. Nehemiah spent time alone with God, actively seeking His presence and guidance when there might have been other things that seemed more important. This is the same battle we face as leaders, to see God Himself as the most important resource. Seek Him first.

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams gives examples from his own life and ministry of how spending time alone with God has played an essential role in fulfilling God’s purpose. You are not responsible for the results of what has called you to do. You are responsible to prioritize God and listening to His voice in order to know what to do.

S4.E8 - Asking Others For Help

Pastor Daniel looks at Nehemiah’s humility in asking for help. He asked God first, he asked the king and he asked the people of Jerusalem to come alongside him to build the wall. What are the lessons we can learn about asking others for help in ministry? Why does it matter to God?

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams shares his own experiences in recognizing his need for help and what a critical role teamwork plays in ministry. No one can do ministry alone. God has called us to be in community. We work better together.

S4.E7 - Persevering in Prayer

Pastor Daniel talks about a subject that is critical to every leader—persevering in prayer. Perseverance is doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. We know that Nehemiah’s prayers to God were not answered immediately. He prayed and kept praying, through sadness and the burden for his people. God teaches us much as leaders through perseverance in prayer.

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams tells the stories of his own perseverance in prayer and how God has used difficulty and delay in building his own faith and shaping him into the leader God wants him to be.

S4.E6 - Character Over Charisma

Pastor Daniel talks about the value of character in a leader. Nehemiah was a cupbearer to the king. This was essentially the role of a servant, but this person played a critical role for the king. The Bible has a lot to say about the value God places on a person’s character, who we are on the inside. This is a great discussion on an important subject in leadership.

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams shares about the role of character in a pastor’s life. It’s definitely not about perfection, but about allowing God to shape and mold you over a lifetime of surrendering to His will and purpose for your life.

S4.E5 - Fasting

Pastor Daniel talks about the spiritual discipline of fasting. When Nehemiah heard of the situation in Jerusalem, he fasted before God (Nehemiah 1:4). It is important to know what fasting is and what it isn’t. We know we are called to fast. Pastor Daniel talks about the correct understanding of fasting and the great spiritual value and benefit it produces in our lives.

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams talks about his own experiences of fasting and how it has impacted his life. It has been a struggle for him as it has for most leaders. But the benefits are worth it.

Pastor Daniel talks about the importance of prayer. From Nehemiah 1:4-11, we read the heartfelt response of Nehemiah’s heart to what he had learned about the situation of the people of Israel in Jerusalem. Nehemiah’s sets an example for leaders of how to respond to the burdens God places on our hearts. It is a prayer packed with wisdom.

In  Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams shares how God has used the power of prayer throughout his 40 years of ministry…sometimes saying yes, sometimes saying no and sometimes saying wait. But God answers every time we pray.

Pastor Daniel talks about the context of Nehemiah. What is happening in Nehemiah’s world at this time? What is the setting? Why does is this important? Nehemiah is an autobiography of Nehemiah’s calling to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city walls which are in ruins. God is restoring the people and the city of Jerusalem once again. God wants to restore us in order to use us in restoring and blessing others. God is in control, even when it doesn’t look like it.

In Pastor’s Perspective, Pastor Joe Williams joins Daniel to share his own perspective on the context of Nehemiah and how God works in difficult situations, through His word, through the writings of others and through the personal relationships we have with brothers and sisters in the faith.

S3.E11 - Sending and Being Sent

June 8, 2020 EEleaders

Leadership Lesson Podcast: Season 3 Episode 11 - Sending and Being Sent

Pastor Pilgrim Benham, Shoreline Church, Bradenton, FL, shares about what it means to send and be sent by God. The Apostle Paul describes his own commissioning in Galatians 1:11-12,  For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. But even though Paul had an unusual calling directly from Jesus Himself, he is still led to spend significant time in preparation before he was sent (Galatians 1 & 2). Pastor Pilgrim uses the examples of Paul, Moses, David, Peter and even Jesus to discuss this “formative time”of preparation and equipping. If you’re a leader who wants to send others, make sure you are investing in training and equipping those who are being sent. For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth. (3 John 7-8) ‘We should be willing to go and be willing to send. Until the Lord comes.”

QUOTES:

“We should expect great things from God. We should attempt great things for God.” - William Carey, 1792

“There should be some of us who are willing to go down into the darkest places to take the gospel to the ends of the earth, yet the only way that we can possibly do that is for someone to ‘hold the ropes.’” -Pilgrim Benham

“Though Paul was greatly used by the Lord, he actually had to first be sent by the Lord.” -Pilgrim Benham

“We have to grow in the grace of God. We have to be rightly prepared before we’re used of God greatly.” -Pilgrim Benham

“We have to be dedicated to the hard, long-term task of sending people.” -Pilgrim Benham

Leadership Lesson Podcast: Season 3 Episode 10 - Organization and Structure

Pastor David Guzik, Santa Barbara, CA talks about the leadership/ministry principles of structure and organization. God’s very character is one that is ordered and structured, even though it may not seem so from our limited human perspective at times. God has passed this character trait to us, who are created in His image. It is a principle spoken of in scripture: But all things should be done decently and in order. (1 Corinthians 14:40) God values this idea. “It isn’t so much that order and organization are requirements for progress in the Christian life. They are progress in the Christian life.” This is not talking about making an idol out of order and structure, but the simple idea that we become more like God as we become more organized and more ordered in what we do. Paul writes to Timothy in Ttius 1:5: This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order. “Order and structure were an important answer for Moses when he was overwhelmed by his leadership responsibilities.” This is an impassioned discussion from one of the most eloquent Bible teachers today. You can read David Guzik’s full Bible commentary online at www.enduringword.com or download the app.

QUOTES:

“We understand that God is a Being of order and structure. There is nothing chaotic about God.”

“I want to challenge you with the idea that there is a limit to what we can be and there is a limit to what we can do for the Lord without order and organization.”

“Sometimes we just accept an unacceptable level of disorganization or chaos in our life.”

“You can’t organize things well until you know what you have. Do you know the resources God has given you?”

‘No inventory is truly complete. And God always works mightily through things that can’t be counted.”

“We don’t make an idol out of our organizing.”

“All order in Israel began by being centered around God Himself. That’s where order and organization begins.”

Leadership Lesson Podcast: Season 3 Episode 9 - Micro Church

Pastor Daniel talks with Peyton Jones, an experienced pastor and church planter in the U.S. and Europe over the past two decades. He is currently in the process of planting a network of churches in the North County San Diego area. Today’s topic is the micro church—what is it and what is all the talk about? This concept has been popularized recently by Francis Chan in his book Letters to the Church. Peyton describes a micro church as more of an outreach gathering. You go to the lost; you don’t wait for them to come to you. This concept is based on minimal ecclesiology, which is not having to have all of the trappings of a large church in order to do ministry. This is pictured in Acts 2:42. Everyday believers are released to use their gifts and calling to reach the lost wherever they are. Peyton has written several books: Church Zero; Reaching the Unreached: Becoming Raiders of the Lost Art; and The Ninja Church Planter. Find him online at peytonjones.ninja

QUOTES:

“Everybody is still just trying to reach lost people.”

“When you read the book of Acts, very little of it happens inside a building. The key is getting out there.”

“Micro church is almost like a missional outpost. It’s not a gathering in your home for a backyard barbecue. It’s going to them, to the lost, where they’re at.”

“Micro is a way of saying you’d focused on the people in front of you at all times.”

“We’re empowering everyday believers in their gifts.”

“We need to always ask, not is it a new thing, but is it a New Testament thing? And if it is, let’s get back to it.”

Based on 1 Samuel 1-4, Daniel recounts the failures of Eli the priest and how the Lord instructs us through failure. Eli had a clear calling by God. He was around the things of God, but he wasn’t worshipping God. He missed out on seeing God work in Hannah’s life when she prayed in the temple for a son. God wants us to focus on Him, on the Giver over the gift. We can get so busy in ministry that we neglect our relationship with the Lord. Eli was fulfilling basic duties, but we are told in 1 Samuel 3:1, 3: And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision…The lamp of God had not yet gone out. Eli was not hearing from God. We are exhorted to abide in Him. Unless we abide in Jesus, we cannot produce fruit. (John 15:4,5) Finally, don’t miss out by compromising your character. Eli made this mistake as well. He did not rebuke his sons and honored man over God (1 Samuel 2:25-30). When we sin and compromise our integrity and character, it produces death. It’s knowing what’s right and not doing it. God gives us these warnings because He doesn’t want us to lose out. Acknowledge His grace and focus your life on Jesus.

QUOTES:

“We need to learn from our mistakes. We need to have humility.”

“As John Maxwell always says, ‘We need to fall forward,’ walking in humility, because God pours out His grace on those that are humble.”

“When we come together and lead His church, this is the grace of God.”

“God is always working, but we have to be looking for it.”

“The task of every generation is to discover in which direction the Sovereign Redeemer is moving and then move in that direction.” - Jonathan Edwards

“Busy-ness doesn’t equal effectiveness.”

“Just because you’re doing good things doesn’t mean you’re doing God things.”

“The most effective way to make Christian leaders is to be one ourselves.”

“God takes sin seriously in our lives as church leaders.”

“We will not miss out if we are able to abide in Jesus.”

Leadership Lesson Podcast: Season 3 Episode 7 - The Will of God

Pastor Daniel talks with his dad, Pastor Joe Williams, Tacoma, Washington about how to make decisions according to God’s will. What is the process for making these type of leadership decisions? First, seek the Lord yourself. God knows your heart and he knows you are trying to do your best. You will make mistakes. Joe talks about some of the ministry mistakes he has made and how God was faithful. Asking God for His will, for peace in making the decision and asking God to close doors where we shouldn’t go. God’s will is revealed one step at a time, by faith. How is patience involved in waiting for God’s will in decision making? God is not on our time schedule. While you are waiting, you are still serving God and carrying out ministry. But you are listening. The Holy Spirit will direct you. How are others in your spiritual community involved in making decisions? Sometimes people can shed light from an angle you have not considered. Seek counsel and ask questions. Always return to seeking God yourself and listening to Him. He is “able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think.” (Ephesians 3:20)

QUOTES:

“No one wants to make a wrong decision. But even when we make a mistake, God’s grace will cover it.”

“I’ve seen God fix mistakes I’ve made over the years. Even in my weakness, He is strong.”

“if I have to make a decision by a certain deadline, I pray about it and when the time comes, I make the best decision I can.”

“You’re going to have to step out to find out.”

“God wants you constantly moving forward, a little bit at a time.”

“Once God speaks to your heart, move out. Because now God is waiting on your.”

“Let’s not get so busy serving God, that we don’t have time for God.”

“All God wants is a vessel He can work through. That’s what we are, a vessel.”

“There is always going to be something there that we are going to have to trust Him for. If we rely upon Him, that is what He wants.”

Leadership Lesson Podcast: Season 3 Episode 6 - The Way God Works

Jason Sanchez, Director of House of Blessing Orphanage in Bachiniva, Chihuahua, Mexico shares the story of how God called his family to this ministry seven years ago. They went by faith in obedience to the Lord, not knowing much else at the time. Philippians 4:6-7 has become a life verse: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Taking encouragement from Paul’s somewhat bumpy journey described in Acts 16, Jason talks about the way God works through life’s rollercoaster experiences in ministry. You can read more about Jason and this ministry online at www.thehouseofblessing.org

“Even though we think God may have forsaken us, God is using those pits and valleys to mold us and shape us.” -Jason Sanchez

‘What seemed to be game-changing, life-ending, painful difficulty was only one more step to a greater and better thing that God had done.” -Jason Sanchez
